how we work

At Bruin Caregiving Scholars (BCS), we are committed to providing caregiving students with options that meet their needs. Whether through in-person engagement or flexible, decentralized options, our approach ensures that all students can participate in ways that work for them.

our approach

Flexible engagement

BCS offers both in-person interactions and flexible, decentralized opportunities for students to engage. Our in-person support groups, workshops, and events provide spaces for face-to-face connection and community building. For those unable to attend in person, we provide recorded meetings, virtual workshops, and an online discussion forum, ensuring students can participate on their own time. Whether students want the structure of in-person engagement or need the flexibility of decentralized options, BCS is designed to accommodate their schedules and responsibilities.

peer-led

BCS is led by caregiving students who understand the challenges of balancing caregiving and academics. Through peer support groups, we create a community where students can exchange advice, share their experiences, and offer emotional support. Our peer-led structure ensures that all members can contribute and benefit from the wisdom of others, whether they connect in person or online.

Research-based policy change

BCS advocates for systemic change that addresses the real needs of caregiving students. Using data from student surveys and feedback, we push for policies like flexible deadlines, financial assistance, and dedicated caregiving resources. Our advocacy efforts involve working closely with UCLA administration and key stakeholders to create long-lasting support systems for caregiving students.

practical support

BCS offers practical workshops and resources tailored to the needs of caregiving students. We cover topics such as time management, mental health, and self-advocacy, providing students with the tools they need to balance caregiving and academic responsibilities. Workshops are available live or as recordings, allowing students to access resources in the format that works best for them.

Our Vision

BCS aims to create lasting institutional support for caregiving students at UCLA and beyond by advocating for policy changes and building expansive, flexible support networks. Our goal is to ensure every caregiving student has access to the resources, recognition, and community they need to succeed.

Support Group

connect

BCS provides a flexible, supportive community for caregiving students to connect, share experiences, and support each other—whether in person or online.
